Upper eyelid lift: A small operation of great importance for my patients

One of the first areas many patients ask me about is their eyes. Our eyes are there for more than just seeing, they communicate our feelings to others. Alert and friendly looking eyes are the goal of eyelid lift surgery, which is one of the most common cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. I remember a woman who explained to me that she used to get compliments on her beautiful blue eyes. Over the years, she noticed that people stopped talking about her eyes. After an eyelid lift, she noticed that strangers were talking about my big blue eyes again. Not that she looked different or what she had done…. but simply that she had really beautiful, striking eyes.

Treatment Overview

Dr. Kelly Vasileiadou explains upper eyelid lift in detail in the video.

What is an eyelid lift?

Upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures to improve your appearance. Droopy eyelids, or drooping eyelids, can make you look older and can also affect your vision. An upper eyelid lift corrects these problems and gives you open fresh bright eyes.
An Eyelid lift is a procedure to remove skin, with or without fat, from the eyelids. The term eyelid lift is somewhat misleading because the eyelid is not actually lifted during surgery. Rather, an upper eyelid lift treats drooping eyelids.

How does the eyelid lift work?

During an upper eyelid lift, I first remove skin and/or fat through a small incision. A thin suture is then used to bring the skin together to allow for the creation of an eyelid crease.

Sagging upper eyelids are corrected through the upper eyelid lift procedure. Under local anesthesia, I carefully remove the excess skin on the upper eyelid as skin spindles in the eyelid crease. Sometimes it is necessary to remove a little fat from the inner eyelid during an upper eyelid lift. In this case, the scar is located in the eyelid crease and is not visible.

During the procedure, an ellipse of skin is removed from the upper eyelid, creating a more tailored look.

Upper eyelid lift is often performed under local anesthesia or can be combined with other procedures such as facelift, neck lift under anesthesia or twilight sleep.

Why Dr. Kelly

I perform upper and lower blepharoplasty and eyebrow lift not with a scalpel, but with radiosurgery and a microneedle.

This technique has the following advantages for the patient:

  • No bruising after the procedure
  • Minimal swelling of the eye area
  • Optimal scarring with fewer wound healing problems
  • More precise performance of the operation
  • Better aesthetic result

Radiosurgery is a technique that allows precise dissection with improved hemostasis. The result is less bruising and smaller swelling. As a result, postoperative recovery is faster.

By using radiosurgery, I can keep bleeding to a minimum. Less bleeding in this normally vascular area allows me to better visualize the anatomy and perform the surgery more precisely. In this way, I also achieve the best possible scarring.

Am I a candidate for an eyelidlift?

Upper eyelid lift may be a good option for you if you:

  • Want to have droopy eyelids removed
  • Have droopy or sagging upper eyelids
  • Have excessive skin on your upper eyelids,

that interfere with your peripheral vision
My patients often combine an eyelid lift with another procedure such as a brow lift, facelift or skin rejuvenation.

How long is the recovery time after an upper eyelid lift?

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in my operating room and takes between 45-60 min for both eyes.

After an eyelid lift, patients usually have a short recovery time. Although bruising and swelling usually accompany the day after surgery, they begin to disappear quickly. During the first 48 hours, the use of cool compresses can greatly reduce bruising and swelling around the eyes and face. After surgery, I usually apply steristrips over the suture. I remove these after a few days, while the stitches may remain in the skin for about 6 days. Sometimes self-absorbing sutures are used, which do not need to be removed but dissolve.

You can usually return to your usual daily activities within seven to ten days after surgery. Two weeks after surgery, most bruising will be fully gone and swelling also goes down in the first 2-3 weeks postoperatively.

When will I see the result of the eyelid lift?

My patients see the preliminary result after three weeks. This improves over the next few weeks and you can expect the final results after about 3 months. The drooping eyelids are then permanently removed.

“Having an eyelid lift is a difficult decision to make. I take a lot of time and counsel my patients individually so you make the right choice for you.”

How long does the eyelid lift last?

Most patients do not need to repeat the upper eyelid lift. The surgery is permanent. Occasionally, patients remove a little more skin from the upper eyelid years after surgery due to skin sagging.
