IPL Laser: The classic and reliable treatment against pigmentation and a younger skin.

Advanced laser technology with IPL skin rejuvenation can be used to remove freckles and other benign brown pigmentation, dark scars, acne scars, dark circles, age spots, melasma, rosacea, couperose and redness due to acne.

Treatment Overview

What is IPL Laser?

IPL laser improves the appearance of the skin, through a process called photorejuvenation for the face and body. The process is ideal for patients with active lifestyles, as the procedure requires no downtime and has a low risk of side effects.

The IPL skin rejuvenation laser systems use handheld flash lamps to emit micro-pulses of light over a broad band of visible wavelengths. By using gentle pulses of light to generate heat, this gentle, non-ablative treatment can be used to treat the face, chest, neck and hands – virtually anywhere there is pigmentation or redness.

The technology offers a range of wavelengths. With my choice of cut-off filters, IPL is comparable to a range of lasers for effective treatment of a variety of vascular and pigmented lesions, including photoaging skin treatments with photorejuvenation. IPL devices offer sophisticated computerized precision and ease of use. Treatments are gentle and offer gradual results with minimal downtime and risk of side effects.

How does IPL treatment work?

During treatment with IPL laser, a broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small, smooth, handpiece that is gently placed over the skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range and can be optimized for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood, if I am treating vascular lesions, or melanin, if I am treating pigmented lesions. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance.

Why does it help to rejuvenate the skin?

When treated with IPL, the light stimulates the production of collagen, which makes the skin appear fuller and more youthful.Whether the concern is pigmentation or rosacea, each IPL treatment also improves fine lines and wrinkles.

How does IPL laser work for pigmentation?

During pigmentation treatment, the targeted areas temporarily absorb the light and become hot, but not long enough to burn. This heat breaks down the pigment into tiny particles that either rise to the surface of the skin as a scab and are naturally shed within 1-2 weeks, or the particles are filtered away through the lymphatic system in your body.

How does IPL laser affect vascular problems?

In the treatment of vascular conditions, such as rosacea or couperose, the light is absorbed by the oxyhemoglobin in the blood of the vein, causing the blood to coagulate and break down the small vessel into particles that can be naturally filtered out of the body by the lymphatic system.

Can IPL help with hair removal?

Yes, IPL was one of the first hair removal technologies on the market. The melanin in the hair (which gives the hair its color) absorbs the light, which is momentarily converted into heat. This heat is transferred to the growth cells at the hair root and makes them permanently harmless. Most unwanted hair color can be removed from all parts of the body, except for very sensitive areas such as the nose and ear.

However, because IPL treatment is not effective for blonde, red, gray or white hair, it is used less and less for hair removal these days. In my practice I offer laser technology with diode SHR for permanent hair removal, which treats almost any color of hair.

“Although it has long been used in the treatment of pigmentation, IPL is still a safe and effective treatment for skin rejuvenation and for the treatment of rosacea.”

What are side effects?

IPL does not work on all hair colors and all skin types. Improving your skin may take about four treatments and individual results may vary. Immediately after treatment for rosacea or pigmentation, you may notice a slight redness of the skin or mild local swelling that can last up to a few hours (or in very rare cases, a few days). These are positive signs that the application has been effective.

After your IPL treatment, areas of pigmentation will darken and rise to the surface of the skin before flaking off naturally in 1-2 weeks. This is a positive indication of a successful result and not a cause for concern. Regular care with sunscreen for a few days afterwards is required.
