Laser therapy: Gentle and painless treatment against spider veins

The heat energy of the laser can penetrate under the skin and close the vein. The laser is able to collapse the spider vein by shrinking it with precisely applied heat energy. 

Laser therapy for spider vein removal is significantly different from the older, more traditional (and invasive) injection treatment – also called sclerotherapy. By using laser technology, there is no need to puncture the skin to close the small spider veins.

Both lasers and injections can effectively remove spider veins, but most patients choose lasers for several reasons: In some cases, these individuals have already tried sclerotherapy but found that it did not work. Others may choose laser because they have an aversion to needles. Some report significant pain and discomfort from sclerotherapy, as well as purple and brown scars at the injection sites. 

You may feel a slight burning or stinging sensation as the laser penetrates your skin. However, pain is usually minimal with laser therapy and no anesthesia is required. For those with low pain tolerance, a numbing cream may be used.

The veins that are actually treated usually only require one to two treatments. However, the treatment time is limited to 30 minutes, so 2-4 treatments may be needed to treat all of them if you have a large area of spider veins.

You may notice redness and slight swelling of the treated area, which should disappear within a few days after laser therapy. Generally, the veins will turn a purple to light purple color and sometimes they may resemble a bruise and then gradually fade over the next few weeks. Cooling is usually recommended to reduce swelling. A second treatment may be needed for veins that have not completely disappeared. This occurs 6-8 weeks after the first treatment for spider veins.

Although the removal of spider veins by laser therapy cannot eliminate all imperfections in the skin, most patients are satisfied with the results. After treatment, the unsightly red veins are significantly diminished and the skin is returned to a more natural, even state. However, it is important to know that laser removal does not prevent the normal effects of aging and the treatment does not prevent the appearance of new spider veins.
