The type of treatment a plastic surgeon recommends depends on the scar and the patient’s goals for treatment. A single treatment may be sufficient to achieve satisfactory results, or the patient may need multiple treatments to minimize the appearance of the scar. These include

• Injection treatments, which are used for concave scars. Multiple injections may be required over time.
• Surface treatments that can reduce the appearance of the scar. Dermabrasion, laser therapy, or chemical peels can be used for this purpose.
• Laser therapy uses state-of-the-art technology to improve the elasticity of the skin. Scars respond over time by gradually flattening and softening. Dark scars usually lose some of their pigment and, in many cases, lighten to better blend in with the surrounding skin. Many scars also appear less red, less swollen and less itchy.
• Depending on how complex the scar is, surgery may be required. Options include excision (cutting out the scar), revision, and/or tissue expansion.
