Breast lift at Dr. Kelly: The specialist for a natural breast shape

A breast lift corrects the position of the nipple, lifts the breast tissue and removes sagging skin.

The breast can be divided into four quadrants or quarters. As your breasts change with age, the upper inner quadrant loses fullness.
A breast lift reshapes your breasts to make them fuller in the upper area and realize firmer breasts. You can have the procedure performed on your breasts regardless of your height or body weight. However, for women with heavier breasts, the results may not last as long and may require liposuction surgery. Such a breast lift corrects the position of the nipple, lifts the breast tissue, removes lax skin and creates firmer breasts overall.

During a mastopexy or breast lift, I reposition the nipple at the level of the breast crease. This is where the nipple is located during adolescence. I prefer the vertical mastopexy technique for breast lift (also called Lejour technique), modified by a special procedure. This provides a harmonious shape in the final result and overall firmer breasts, especially in the upper part of the breast.

I use three incisions to perform the lift of this breast surgery, depending on the distance the nipple needs to be lifted and the shape of your breast. If the nipple needs to move a minimal degree, it is possible to make the incision around what is called the areola. Depending on the amount of reshaping needed, there may be a fine scar vertically along the underside of the breast. During your consultation, I will help you determine which option will give you the most natural and youthful result. Breast lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in our operating room. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the operation lasts two to three hours.

When it comes to breast lift or reduction, one of the most common questions I get is: “What will the scars look like?” The word scar, in general, has a bad connotation and creates fear in most people. I prefer the term “incision lines” as compared to “scars.”
To be honest there are few places where patients are more fearful about scars than their breasts. Breast reductions and lifts typically involve an “anchor style” pattern of incision lines around the areola and vertically below it. The only “line” that is visible initially is the vertical line. The shape improvement imparted by these lines is well worth the tradeoff for the incision lines in more than 90 percent of all patients.
I check in the OR that any incisions made during a lift will be extremely thin, with the focus being on minimizing scarring.
But also postoperatively, we also give great importance to post surgery scar care. We advise our patients against direct sun exposure, plenty of sunscreen, massaging the scar. We can provide specific scar creams, silicon pads, cortisol injections and laser treatments.
With all that we manage to help the skin heal properly and reduce the appearance of breast scars dramatically.

If your breast is very small or has lost volume, combining a breast lift with implants can be a great way to increase the firmness of the breast area and generally make it larger. I discuss this option frequently with my patients, but it is entirely up to you which type of breast lift and general breast surgery you choose. On the one hand, you can opt for mastopexy alone, or combine it with breast augmentation for the ultimate in breast rejuvenation.

After mastopexy your breast will be supported by a gentle bandage and a soft bra. You will wear this bra around the clock for the first month after breast surgery. You will probably find that your breast is swollen and sore for the first few days after surgery. Most patients need pain medication for the first few days and can return to work after a week. You can begin light, athletic activities the day after surgery, and strenuous exercise is possible again after about four weeks.

Are the results of breast lift permanent? Breast lift results are long term, but weight changes, pregnancy and natural aging can change the appearance of the breast. That’s why I stay in contact with my patients for many years after their breast lift surgery, so that I can follow the results over the long term.
