What is a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery (mammareductionplasty) removes fat, breast tissue and skin from the breast to create a smaller breast that is proportional to your body. The surgery, also known as reductionplasty, reduces the size and weight of your breast. This will relieve your pain and discomfort. You will also notice an aesthetic improvement in the shape and firmness of your breasts.

It also reduces the diameter of your nipple and puts the nipple in a more youthful position. The scar will be significantly smaller and almost completely disappear over the course of a year.

The result is a proportional body profile that you will love and enjoy.

Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

If large, uneven breasts are interfering with your daily lifestyle, consider mammoplasty (breast reduction). Many patients complain of back, shoulder and neck pain, irritation or infection under their breasts, difficulty finding appropriate clothing and bras, problems with their posture and social anxiety related to overdeveloped breasts.

At what age should I decide to have a breast reduction?

Women of all ages can benefit from breast reduction. Teenagers, mothers and older women come to my practice to benefit from this surgery. When patients are teenagers, it is important that they have a regular

menstrual cycle and have a stable breast size in the six months prior to surgery. In addition, based on the great satisfaction of my teenage patients, I see no reason to wait until women are in their twenties to perform the procedure.

How can I decide on the desired size of the breast?

During our consultations I will ask you questions about your desired size. Many of my patients are afraid that their breasts will look too small after the procedure, and some others want their breasts as small as possible. Although much of the decision is based on the geometry of your body, your personal desires are of tremendous importance. The focus of the procedure is less on achieving an exact cup size and more on relieving painful symptoms and improving breast shape. The results of breast reduction (mammoplasty) are immediate, but the contour of your breasts will continue to improve over the next six to twelve months as swelling subsides for a more balanced and pleasing appearance.

Where does the incision or scar of a breast reduction run?

I prefer to use the Lejour vertical incision for mammoplasty as I do for breast lift. In this procedure, the skin is removed only from the lower part of the breast to avoid scars on the upper side of the breast above the nipple level. The vertical incision includes a circle around the nipple and a straight line from the nipple to the base of the breast.

I take every precaution to preserve the sensation of the nipple. Removal of the breast tissue and the resulting swelling after the procedure may reduce or increase sensation for a short time. This irritation often disappears over time as the swelling decreases. Total loss of sensation is more common with larger reductions, but fortunately is not common.

What is the postoperative period of breast reduction like?

After the procedure you will wear a support bra for 6 weeks. Most patients only require pain medication for the first few days after surgery and return to work after one week. You can resume light daily activities the day after surgery and begin exercising again four weeks after surgery.

Results should be long-term, but weight changes, pregnancy, menopause and natural aging can change the appearance of the breasts again. Nevertheless, it is rare for patients to have a second reduction mammoplasty, as most patients are satisfied by the initial reduction.

Can I breastfeed normally after breast reduction?

Women who can breastfeed before surgery can continue to breastfeed later. Although the amount of milk-producing glandular tissue is reduced, the ductal system used to transport milk to the nipple remains. Patients who require less breast surgery are likely to have fewer changes in milk production.
