IPL: The classic and reliable treatment against brown and red skin pigments

scroll

Modern IPL laser technology can be used to remove freckles and other benign brown pigmentation, dark scars, acne scars, dark circles, age spots, melasma, rosacea, couperose and redness caused by broken capillaries from the acne-skin and restore the youthful appearance of the skin.

The technology improves the appearance of the skin through a process called photorejuvenation for face and body. The process is ideal for patients with an active lifestyle because it does not require downtime and has a low risk of side effects.

The IPL systems use hand-held flash lamps to emit micropulses of light over a wide band of visible wavelengths. Using gentle light pulses to generate heat, this gentle, non-ablative treatment can be used to treat the face, chest, neck and hands – virtually anywhere where pigmentation occurs.

The technology offers a range of wavelengths. With my selection of cut-off filters, IPL is comparable to a range of lasers for effective treatment of a variety of vascular and pigmented lesions, including photoaging skin treatments with photorejuvenation. IPL devices offer sophisticated computer-controlled precision and user-friendliness. The treatments are gentle and offer gradual results with minimal downtime and the risk of side effects.

How does the Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work?

A wide light spectrum is transmitted through a small, smooth, handpiece that is gently placed over the skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range and can thus be optimized for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is either absorbed by the blood when I treat vascular lesions or melanin when I treat pigmented lesions. The natural processes of the body then remove the injured tissue and give the skin a more even and youthful appearance.

Why does IPL also work for skin rejuvenation?

During the IPL treatment, the light stimulates the production of collagen that makes the skin appear fuller and younger. This is why, no matter if your main concern is pigmentation or rosacea, an IPL treatment can also improve fine lines and wrinkles.

IPL laser treatment for rosacea and pigmentation

"Although it has long been used in the treatment of pigmentation, IPL is still a safe and effective treatment for skin rejuvenation and rosacea.

How does IPL work on skin pigmentation?

In pigmentation treatment, the target areas temporarily absorb the light and become hot but not long enough to burn. This heat breaks down the pigment into tiny particles, which either rise to the skin surface as scabs and are removed naturally within 1-2 weeks, or the particles are filtered off by the lymphatic system in your body.

How does IPL work on vascular problems on the skin?

In the treatment of vascular conditions such as rosacea, the light is absorbed by the oxyhemoglobin in the blood of the vein, causing the blood to coagulate and the small vessel to break down into particles that can be naturally filtered out of the body by the lymphatic system.

How many treatments are usually required?

This depends on the extent of the problem and the skin type. The more severe the problem, the more treatments are generally needed for optimal results. In my experience pigmentation, such as age spots or melasma, requires between 1-3 treatments, rosacea sometimes requires between 3 and 6 treatments to achieve maximum clearance of blood vessels and redness.

Especially in rosacea, which is difficult to treat, I have seen dramatic results in only three treatments where patients have reported that the burning of the face has disappeared. Patients can receive a refreshing treatment as a preventive measure. I usually recommend once a year or as needed.

Can IPL help with hair removal?

Yes, IPL was one of the first hair removal technologies on the market. The melanin in the hair (which gives the hair its colour) absorbs the light that is currently converted into heat. This heat is transferred to the growth cells at the hair root and makes them permanently harmless. Most unwanted hair colors can be removed from all parts of the body, except very sensitive areas such as nose and ear.

Because IPL treatment is not effective for blonde, red, gray or white hair, it is used less and less for hair removal today. In my practice I offer laser technology with diode SHR for permanent hair removal, which treats almost every color of hair.

Does the treatment with IPL hurt?

Not really, although sensitivity to pain will vary from patient to patient. Most of my patients say that it feels like moving a fine warm needle on their skin. Any discomfort is momentary and there is no long lasting feeling.

What are the side effects of IPL treatments?

IPL does not work on all hair colors and all skin types. Improving your skin with IPL may require about four treatments and individual results may vary. Immediately after the IPL treatment for rosacea or pigmentation, you may notice a slight redness of the skin or local swelling, which can last up to several hours (or in very rare cases several days). These are positive signs that the IPL treatment has been effective. After your IPL treatment, areas of pigmentation will darken and rise to the surface of the skin before peeling naturally in 1-2 weeks. This is a positive indication of successful IPL treatment and not a cause for concern. Sunscreen for a few days after treatment is required.

Is IPL safe?

IPL is safe, non-invasive, has minimal side effects and requires no recovery time. IPL laser is gentler than laser and much faster because a larger area can be treated with any flash. I appreciate the comfort and safety of my patients and will take great care to ensure that you feel comfortable with every aspect of the treatment.
