Scar treatment with fillers

In addition to a combination of lasers, peelings, retinoids and microneedling units, I treat some atrophic (sunken) scars with fillers. 

When I want to treat scars with filler I use one of two techniques, depending on the type and number of scars. Injecting filler into the dermis/epidermis under atrophic scars lifts them and improves the overall appearance of the skin. This can be accomplished by either targeting pitted scars with a filling filler or approaching an entire area with a lighter filler used primarily as a skin enhancer for hydration and skin improvement.

Whether and to what extent the result of treatment with fillers is permanent is a question I am repeatedly asked. The use of semi-permanent fillers means that the improvement is gradual and must be repeated. My experience is that scars rarely return to their previous state. The type of filler I use determines longevity. I use hyaluronic fillers, so six to twelve months is the norm. You see the results immediately and can watch them improve over the following weeks.

In my experience, the use of fillers is an effective solution for the reduction of sunken scars. The results are immediately visible and the outcome continues to improve over the next few weeks as there is a dual effect of the procedure: physical lifting and removal of the scar and collagen development. Not all scars respond the same, and the response is determined by the type and depth of the scar, as well as how the underlying tissue is disturbed; this determines the placement of the filler.
