Can capsular contracture resolve on its own?

Unfortunately not. Capsular contracture is a structural tissue problem – the hardened connective tissue layer around the implant does not reverse without treatment. In early stages (Baker Grade I–II), the progression can be monitored and managed conservatively. From Grade III onwards, however, we recommend surgical treatment, as the condition typically continues to progress without intervention.

How high is the risk of developing capsular contracture again after the procedure?

The risk of recurrence is significantly lower after a correctly performed total capsulectomy combined with a switch to modern implants than it was after the original surgery. We rely on nanotextured implants, the Keller Funnel®, and a specific intraoperative prophylaxis protocol to minimise the risk of it happening again.

What is the difference between capsulotomy and capsulectomy?

In a capsulotomy, the capsule is incised and released but partially retained. This technique is appropriate for milder cases. Capsulectomy, by contrast, removes the capsule entirely – in advanced capsular contracture, this is the more thorough and lasting solution that we typically recommend.

Will my breasts feel soft and natural again after surgery?

Yes. That is precisely the goal of the procedure: breasts that feel natural again, look harmonious, and cause no discomfort. With modern implants and careful surgical technique, a soft, natural result can be achieved in virtually all cases.

Will I also need a breast lift?

This depends on your individual findings. If the capsular contracture has been present for a longer period and the tissue has been stretched, a complementary breast lift (mastopexy) may be advisable to achieve an even, lifted result. We discuss this in detail during the consultation.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the severity of the capsular contracture and the chosen technique, the operation typically lasts between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. It is performed on an outpatient basis, and you can go home the same day.

Are the costs for capsular contracture surgery covered by health insurance?

In Switzerland, health insurers generally do not cover aesthetic procedures. In certain cases – where documented health impairment or pain is present – a partial contribution may be applied for. We are happy to advise you on this and support you in communicating with your insurer.

When can I return to sport after surgery?

Light activities are possible again after a few days. Sport, heavy lifting, and intense physical exertion should be avoided for three to four weeks to allow healing and results to progress optimally.

Can I change my implant size during the same procedure?

Absolutely. Many women use this procedure as an opportunity to adjust the size or shape of their implants – whether slightly smaller for a more natural appearance, or a little larger. We work with implant sizers during your consultation so you can see and feel the differences in advance.

What if I do not want replacement implants?

Complete implant removal without replacement is also possible. Depending on tissue quality, we may recommend a breast lift or fat transfer in this case, to naturally restore shape and fullness. Your surgeon will discuss all options with you in detail.
