Caring for Your Skin: Pre- and Post-Plastic Surgery
The decision to undergo plastic surgery is a big step for many of my patients. Whether it’s a breast augmentation, facial wrinkle treatment or an eyelid lift: The right skin care is crucial for all of these procedures, both before and after the operation.
After all, as my many years of experience as an expert in aesthetic and plastic surgery show: Only with thoughtful, good skin care can you achieve an optimal, appealing result with surgical procedures. Another plus: the healing process is accelerated. In this article, I explain in detail what is important when it comes to skin care before and after plastic surgery.
How to prepare your skin for the procedure
One thing is clear: before I perform plastic surgery on you, you should get your skin in optimum condition. You can do this by paying more attention to cleansing and moisturizing. For example, you can use mild, pH-neutral cleansing products. Such mild cream cleansers, often sold under the label “gentle cleanser”, remove make-up, sebum and dirt without drying out the skin. In contrast to conventional cleansing products, gentle cleansers even soothe sensitive and dry skin. You can also use fragrance-free moisturizers after washing.
About two weeks before the planned procedure, I also advise my patients to avoid irritating skin products. These include, for example, products with a high concentration of alpha and beta hydroxy acids, but also strong peelings and retinoids. As these can irritate the skin and have a negative impact on the healing process, it is better to avoid them before the procedure. Good sun protection is at least as important: if you want to protect your skin from UV radiation, you should choose sun protection products with a factor of at least 30 SPF or higher. It is also advantageous if the sunscreen applied is light so that it does not clog the pores.
This immediate aftercare is necessary after your procedure
Anyone who has undergone plastic surgery should treat their skin with the utmost care afterwards. This applies in particular to the sensitive skin on the face, e.g. during treatments such as facelifts or an eyelid lift. It is therefore essential to cleanse the skin – if necessary – only very gently with lukewarm water and mild cleansers.
Especially scar treatment is an absolute must. Here we created a special oil for our patients, the Boabab oil. This is the best post-op treatment oil you can find. It promotes better scar healing and keeps the skin soft and smooth.
For the necessary cooling and swelling relief immediately after the procedure, I advise my patients to use cooling compresses or special cooling masks. This reduces swelling and unsightly bruising. On the other hand, you should avoid ice packs that are placed directly on the skin. These can cause frostbite.
Take long-term care of your skin with these tricks
To care for your skin in the long term after plastic surgery and ensure optimal aftercare, you can support the moisture and regeneration of your skin. After the initial healing phase, the skin needs particularly intensive moisturizing care. Products with hyaluronic acid, such as Hyaluron Peptide Serum, are well suited to this end. This helps your skin to hydrate itself in depth and supports rapid regeneration.
Nutrition and hydration play an important role
Often neglected, but no less important for healthy skin care: a balanced, low-sugar diet. Eating plenty of vitamins and minerals helps the skin to heal. Vitamins C, E and zinc play a particularly essential role here: they promote collagen formation and skin regeneration.
Although the effects are widely known, many people have an inadequate fluid intake – which can be reflected in the appearance of your skin. Therefore, make sure you drink enough fluids every day. With enough water, your skin can hydrate itself from the inside out. Unsweetened herbal teas and water-rich foods such as melons or cucumbers are also well suited for increasing the volume of fluid in the body.
