Gynecomastia Surgery – Male Breast Reduction

Depending on the amount of excess skin and breast tissue, the procedure may involve liposuction only or may also require skin removal. If the breast is composed primarily of fatty tissue, liposuction may be used to remove fat from under the nipple or within the natural contours of the breast.

For a man’s breast with an excessive amount of breast tissue, excision surgery is required. Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure that I perform in my operating room under local anesthesia.

Through a simple, outpatient male breast reduction procedure, many men can regain a smooth, contoured, masculine chest.

For mild to moderate cases of gynecomastia (man boobs) where there is no excess skin, liposuction is sufficient to remove the unwanted fat. Liposuction techniques separate the glandular tissue and fat from the surrounding skin and muscle, and remove it through small incisions hidden under and next to the breast. These incisions are barely visible once they have healed.

In moderate to severe cases of gynecomastia with excess breast tissue and skin, liposuction alone is not sufficient because the skin must also be removed. In these cases, I first perform liposuction to remove excess fat and glandular tissue. I then remove the skin through an incision that will later be located at the base of your pectoralis muscle under your breast. This technique can also reduce or reposition your areola.

An important cause that makes the breasts excessively large is obesity (overweight). Excess fatty tissue in the breasts is a condition known as pseudogynecomastia because the excessive breast growth is caused by fat, not breast tissue. If you are overweight, it is best to try losing weight first and see if the problem resolves.

However, men who are healthy and have a normal weight also come to see me. In adolescents, it is advisable to wait at least two years from breast development for breast reduction. It is also important that the breast development has stabilized.

Both the fat cells and the skin and glandular tissue are permanently removed from your body. A flatter and more defined male chest is visible immediately after surgery, after the swelling subsides. You will be able to see the final results within 6 months. The results are long lasting if you maintain a stable weight.
