Breast Augmentation and Motherhood: Considering Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Having a baby and breastfeeding is a very fulfilling life period for many women. Despite this, physical and hormonal changes in their breasts leave many of my patients feeling dissatisfied and with diminished self-esteem. As a result, they consider having a breast augmentation.
As a Swiss specialist in aesthetic surgery, I specialize in giving the female breast new volume and precise, beautiful contours. In the following article on breast augmentation, I therefore answer all the sensitive questions that may arise in connection with your maternity, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
More volume and well-being – through breast augmentation
For many women who have lost breast volume during breastfeeding or who generally have little breast volume, breast augmentation is an attractive option for restoring or even creating a firm shape, fullness and symmetry in their breasts. This allows them to change their appearance and ultimately their personal well-being for the better.
The biggest concern: Can I still breastfeed after breast augmentation?
The most common question that women ask me in my practice in Zug is whether they will be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. Basically, I can reassure you here: in the regular case, you can continue to breastfeed a baby after breast augmentation.
However, the implant size and surgical technique you choose for the procedure are important: In order to maintain your ability to breastfeed, the implants must be placed under the breast muscle, as this is the best way to ensure that the milk ducts are not impaired. Alternatively, the inframammary crease can also be chosen for insertion to minimize the risk and avoid disrupting the milk production.
As an expert in aesthetic breast augmentation, I will use my specialist knowledge to advise you comprehensively on your considerations and help you to select and carry out the procedure in such a way that the ability to breastfeed as a natural function of your breast is preserved in any case.
The right time: before or after pregnancy?
My patients are also regularly concerned about the right time for their breast augmentation. In principle, there are no fixed rules. However, I usually recommend my patients to have their breast augmentation after the end of their family planning.
The reason for this is that further pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause new physical changes to your breast. For example, after breast augmentation, if you become pregnant or breastfeed another time your breast tissue may lose its firmness and contract again – despite the implant being in place.
By delaying breast augmentation, you can reduce the risk of another necessary correction and look forward to long-term results. Nevertheless, in individual cases it may make sense for you to have a breast augmentation before your family planning is complete. In such case, I am at your side as a competent advisor as well and will consult with you individually and carefully on breast augmentation before a possible pregnancy.
The advantages of breast augmentation for you as a mum
In my experience, there are many reasons why women with children decide to have breast augmentation after one or more pregnancies. Some mothers want to restore lost volume and their previous breast contours. Others, who did not have a full or symmetrical breast shape before pregnancy and breastfeeding, can finally achieve their desired aesthetic or more even breast shape through breast augmentation.
However, the result is the same in both cases: my patients are happier with their body and emerge from the procedure with increased self-confidence thanks to their positive new self-image. With the modern surgical technique I use and today’s implants, it is possible to achieve very natural results. The augmented breast does not look artificial afterwards, but emphasizes your natural beauty.
Do’s and don’ts: What you need to look out for
Before a breast augmentation, a thorough, personal consultation with me and my team is absolutely essential: At our facilities in Zug, I will discuss your specific goals and expectations with you and work with you to find the best method for your breast augmentation. The focus is on choosing the right implant. The material, shape and size should be tailored to your needs. The shape of your implants – round or anatomically shaped – allows you to achieve different aesthetic results.
The healing phase and aftercare deserve just as much attention: Even if you only have a short recovery period to plan for, it is particularly important for you as a mother to get support for the first week after the operation – especially if you currently have to carry and lift small children. A special support bra and my regular aftercare appointments, where I monitor and check the results of your breast augmentation, also offer you support
Breast augmentation and motherhood: doable!
My many years of expertise as an aesthetic surgeon in Switzerland have shown me that breast augmentation is a step towards greater self-confidence and an overall better body image for many mums.
