What is breast implant removal?
Breast implant removal – also called explantation – is a surgical procedure in which one or both implants are removed, sometimes together with the thin layer of tissue (capsule) that naturally forms around them. Depending on skin elasticity and tissue, the breast often returns to a beautiful, natural shape on its own. In some cases, a breast lift (mastopexy) can be performed at the same time to firm and harmonize the shape.

Why undergo breast implant removal?
Every woman has her own story – and every reason is valid. Perhaps you have loved your implants for many years and now wish for a more natural breast shape. Or you feel tightness, discomfort or changes in your body that are prompting a new step. Common reasons include:
- The desire for a more natural appearance
- Capsular contracture (hardening or feeling of tightness)
- Implant rupture
- Asymmetry or displacement
- Physical changes after pregnancy or weight loss
- The wish to return to your original breast size
- Health-related reasons, e.g., suspected Breast Implant Illness (BII)
No matter what motivates you – we listen, advise honestly, and find the safest and most aesthetic solution for you together.
How does breast implant removal work?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or gentle twilight sedation (sedation with local anesthesia) – keeping you completely pain-free and relaxed, without the risks of general anesthesia.
For a simple explantation, pure local anesthesia is often sufficient. If the capsule (capsulectomy) is also removed, twilight sleep provides more comfort and calm.
The incision is usually made along the existing scar so that no new scar remains visible. The implant is then carefully removed and – if necessary – the capsule is released.
After removal, the breast may lose some fullness. In such cases, a breast lift can be performed in the same session to elevate and harmonize the shape.
Which techniques do we use?
Our surgeons at Dr. Kelly® perform breast implant removals regularly and with decades of experience.
Depending on the individual situation, the most suitable method is selected:
- Simple explantation – only the implant is removed
- Partial capsulectomy – only thickened or hardened parts of the capsule are removed
- Total or “en bloc“ capsulectomy – implant and capsule are removed as one unit
As specialists in breast implant removal, we perform hundreds of breast operations every year. Each surgery is planned individually – with the utmost focus on safety, comfort, and an aesthetically balanced result.
“Breast implant removal doesn’t mean that you change – it means you return to yourself.”
What anesthesia can you expect?
For breast implant removal, we work almost exclusively without general anesthesia.
Instead, we use local anesthesia or twilight sedation – a gentle form of “sleep” combined with local numbing.
This offers many benefits:
- No risks or side effects of general anesthesia
- Faster recovery and less strain on the cardiovascular system
- You are pain-free yet wake up quickly and clearly
- No overnight stay required – you go home the same day
Our experienced anesthesia team ensures that you feel completely comfortable and safe before, during, and after surgery. Our goal: a pleasant, completely pain-free procedure.
Recovery after breast implant removal
Compared to breast augmentation, recovery time after breast implant removal is significantly shorter.
- After a simple explantation, you can usually resume daily life after about 2 days.
- After explantation with capsulectomy, recovery time is around 7 days.
- Avoid sports and heavy lifting for 4 weeks.
- A compression bra may be recommended by the surgeons for 2 to 4 weeks.
You will receive detailed aftercare instructions, and our team will closely accompany you throughout the healing process.
Results
After breast implant removal, many women feel one thing above all: lightness – physically and emotionally. Your breasts will return to their new, natural shape within a few weeks. As the incision usually follows the old scar, hardly any new scarring occurs. If a lift is combined, the breast appears firmer, more youthful, yet completely natural.
