What is Dr. Kelly® SEDIVA®?
Based on our many years of experience in plastic surgery, we have created our own anaesthesia protocol that goes far beyond the conventional notion of “twilight sleep”. What makes it special is a carefully developed combination of different medications whose dosage, administration and timing are precisely coordinated with one another. This is complemented by precise local anaesthesia and a structured recovery concept. You sleep deeply, are free of pain and are usually unaware of the operation. Unlike with a classic general anaesthetic, you breathe on your own throughout.
Good to know: For many patients, the anaesthetic is their biggest worry before an operation, often bigger than the procedure itself. With SEDIVA®, we want to take away exactly this worry: with an anaesthesia method that is gentle, carefully monitored and allows you to wake up calmly.
Dr. Kelly® SEDIVA® combines years of experience, medical precision and personal care that puts your well-being first.
Not all twilight sleep is the same
Many providers operate under twilight sleep. However, the term can describe very different methods. Depending on which medications are used and how they are combined and dosed, twilight sleep can be so light that you still respond when spoken to, or so deep that you are not consciously aware of the procedure.
So light that you still respond when spoken to.
Deep, individually controlled sleep. You are not consciously aware of the procedure and you breathe on your own.
Complete unconsciousness, breathing often assisted or controlled.
Four things make the difference
Our own combination of medications
The sleep and pain medications are coordinated so that their effects complement each other. This allows the dosage of individual medications to be adjusted precisely.
Local anaesthesia
The surgical area is additionally numbed with local anaesthesia. This reduces pain stimuli exactly where the operation takes place.
Individual dosage
No two people react to medication in the same way. Throughout the operation, our anaesthesia team adjusts the dosage to your physical condition and to the course of the operation.
Controlled waking
The medications are selected and coordinated so that their effect wears off quickly after the procedure. The aim is a calm awakening with as little grogginess as possible.
Our protocol was developed on the basis of many years of surgical experience and is specifically tailored to the requirements of aesthetic surgery. What matters is not only the choice of medications, but above all how precisely they work together.
Which active ingredients are combined? In what dosage are they administered? At what point in time? How is the depth of sleep adjusted during the operation? And how can waking up afterwards be made as pleasant as possible?
These details make the difference.
SEDIVA® is therefore not simply another name for twilight sleep. It is our own structured approach to anaesthesia and recovery in aesthetic surgery.
Why we developed SEDIVA®
A good operation does not end with the last stitch. How you wake up, how you feel in the first few hours and how quickly you are yourself again are as much a part of the result for us as the operation itself.
Over the years, we have seen how much a general anaesthetic takes out of many patients: nausea, grogginess, a sore throat and the feeling of having lost a day. SEDIVA® grew out of this experience and the close collaboration between surgery and anaesthesia: a protocol that we continuously refine and tailor to our procedures.
It stands for what we believe in: medicine that does no more than necessary, but does what is necessary with the utmost care.
Twilight sleep or general anaesthesia: the difference
For many patients, the anaesthetic is one of their biggest worries before an operation. The idea of losing consciousness completely, being ventilated or suffering from nausea and severe grogginess after the procedure can be unsettling.
With Dr. Kelly® SEDIVA®, we offer an alternative to classic general anaesthesia for all surgical procedures, unless there are medical reasons against it.
| Criterion | Dr. Kelly® SEDIVA® | Classic general anaesthesia |
|---|---|---|
| Consciousness | Deep, individually controlled sleep | Complete unconsciousness |
| Breathing | Independent | Often assisted or controlled |
| Breathing tube | Not required | Required depending on the method |
| Pain control | Coordinated sleep and pain medication with local anaesthesia | General anaesthesia, sometimes supplemented by local anaesthesia |
| Waking up | Designed for a quick, clear awakening | Depends on medications and method, often groggier |
| Going home | After 2–3 hours | Often later, sometimes after an overnight stay |
Which anaesthesia is right for you?
We clarify this carefully and openly in the preliminary consultation.
Your benefits at a glance
Breathing on your own
No breathing tube is needed, so you are usually spared the sore throat and hoarseness that can occur after intubation.
Targeted medication
Thanks to the coordinated combination and local anaesthesia, we use only as much medication as is needed for effective and comfortable anaesthesia.
Less nausea
Our protocol is designed for a pleasant awakening. In our experience, nausea occurs less often than after many general anaesthesia methods, although it cannot be ruled out completely.
Waking up clearly
After the procedure, you are quickly responsive and oriented again and soon feel like yourself.
Home the same day
After 2–3 hours of recovery, you go home accompanied and recover in your familiar surroundings.
Back to everyday life sooner
Because your body does not also have to recover from a general anaesthetic, you are usually active again sooner.
Who is SEDIVA® particularly suitable for?
We use SEDIVA® for all surgical procedures. It is particularly appreciated by people who:
- are afraid of general anaesthesia
- have suffered from nausea or severe grogginess after previous anaesthetics
- prefer to recover at home rather than as an inpatient

Expert opinion
“In the preliminary consultation, we often hear the same sentence: I am more afraid of the anaesthetic than of the operation. We take this concern seriously. With SEDIVA®, we explain exactly what happens during the procedure, and our anaesthesia team stays by your side the whole time. Most patients tell us afterwards that they had imagined waking up to be much harder.”

FAQ
We are happy to answer your personal questions in the preliminary consultation.
Book a personal consultation →Is SEDIVA® the same as ordinary twilight sleep?+
No. “Twilight sleep” only describes the type of anaesthesia. Which medications are used, how deep the sleep is and how waking up is managed can vary greatly. SEDIVA® is our own protocol, combining a coordinated set of medications, local anaesthesia and a structured recovery concept.
Do I really sleep deeply?+
Yes. The aim of SEDIVA® is a deep sleep in which you are not consciously aware of the procedure. The depth of sleep is monitored and continuously adjusted throughout the operation.
Can I wake up during the operation?+
Our anaesthesia team continuously monitors the depth of sleep and adjusts it immediately so that you are unaware of the procedure. There is never an absolute guarantee in medicine. That is why we leave nothing to chance.
Will I feel any pain?+
During the operation, you are free of pain thanks to deep sleep and local anaesthesia. Afterwards, you receive individually tailored pain management.
What is the difference from general anaesthesia?+
With SEDIVA®, you breathe on your own, without a breathing tube. The medications are precisely dosed and combined with local anaesthesia, and the protocol is designed for a quick, clear awakening.
Is SEDIVA® gentler than general anaesthesia?+
In many cases, yes: no breathing tube is needed, individual medications can be given in lower doses, and you recover more quickly. We clarify which anaesthesia is right for you in the preliminary consultation.
Why do I wake up faster after SEDIVA®?+
A key part of our protocol is the careful selection, combination and timing of the medications. As a result, their effect wears off quickly after the procedure. How quickly you are fully awake and recovered also depends on your individual response and the length of the operation.
Will I feel nauseous after SEDIVA®?+
Our protocol is designed for a pleasant awakening, so nausea occurs less often. It cannot be ruled out completely. If it does occur, we treat it specifically.
When can I go home?+
After an appropriate monitoring and recovery period of usually 2–3 hours and medical clearance, accompanied by someone you trust.
Can I drive myself after the operation?+
No, not in the first 24 hours. Please arrange for someone to accompany you home.
Do I need to fast?+
Yes. Please do not eat anything from 6 hours before the procedure. You will receive precise instructions in the preliminary consultation.
Who looks after me during the operation?+
Our anaesthesia team is with you throughout the operation and continuously monitors your breathing, circulation and other vital functions.
Is SEDIVA® suitable for everyone?+
We use SEDIVA® for all surgical procedures, unless there is a medical contraindication. We clarify this in the preliminary consultation based on your medical history.
Is SEDIVA® included in the price?+
Yes. The anaesthesia is part of our surgical fees, in line with our “One Price, No Surprise” principle.
Our experience. Our protocol. Your well-being.
Our own combination of medications, a precisely coordinated protocol and one clear goal: to sleep deeply, wake up clearly and recover quickly.
Sleep beautifully. Wake up clearly.
